The 5-track EP opens with Late Vanilla Boy — a song with a title inspired by an ice cream bowl. Kiwi hate-cute musician Bittercup describes the sound as “a montage of something mechanical, that turns out to be just a daydream you were having while driving, which in turn was just a daydream you were having while sunbathing on a cruise”. Or, more succinctly: “puzzle game chill”. Rather than singing on Late Vanilla Boy, Fanfickk features the Mandarin spoken word of a friend.
Before allowing you to get comfortable on your listening journey, Fanfickk hits you with the deeply unsettling Pure. A sinister synth-bass coupled with airy vocals welcomes you into the song, like a creepy neighbour into their house, and things escalate rapidly from there. Drums by Corey Friedlander (8 Foot Sativa, City Of Souls) cement the industrial nature of the track — its sound reminiscent of Nine Inch Nails, hopefully on a good day.
Epic, 80's-style electronic drums and searing saxophone samples will make you strangely nostalgic for the future on Entitled To Fun. Its sparse vocals leave the themes wide open to interpretation, much like the title of the song itself. A last minute addition to the EP is Idealist (It’s Not TV). At just 54 seconds long, the tune is an intimate interlude that feels like it ends before it really begins—perfectly paralleling its subject matter.
Skull Pocket ends on Sun Damage — a sonic sinking feeling. The track encapsulates the atmosphere of the EP: waves of hope and hopelessness wailing at each other across the ocean… or is it whales waving at each other? The lowest of basslines throbs relentlessly throughout, while Fanfickk’s haunting vocals linger, obscured but seemingly desperate to be heard. “This song sounds like the thoughts in my skull pocket”, says Fanfickk, while petting her cat (not a euphemism).
Skull Pocket is due for release on November 8.
