This week on COAST we have live in the studio one of Auckland’s best-kept secrets, international producer and beatmaker-on-the-sly – Juse. Juse’s beats have provided muscle for many of the top MC’s and vocalists in Aotearoa, including Savage, Mareko, Shayne Carter, Scribe, Che Fu and Kapisi, as well as new South Auckland crew Smashproof.
Juse’s debut album ‘Global Casino’ is about to drop, and we’ve got live performances from Juse & Smashproof with ‘Ride ‘Til I Die’, and Juse & Tha Feelstyle doing the newest single from the album, ‘Same Old Issues’.
Also performing live on the show we have The Kingites, whose self-titled debut EP is now in-stores after two years of hard work. This 8-piece band has a dynamic sound which ranges from reggae to hip-hop and over to RnB, all with a strong Aotearoa roots flavour, brought to the fore by original member – and former Dam Native – Hone ‘H One’ Manukau. 2005 ended well for The Kingites with a Souled Out recordings remix of their track ‘Whistling In the Dark’ on the reggae/roots compilation Conscious Roots 2. 2006 has started off even better, with a wicked performance in sunny Raglan at Soundsplash in Feb, followed by this performance on COAST!
We’ve got vidz (new ones from Dawn Raid’s leading lady Aaradhna, and the remix version of Busta Rhymes’ Touch It), we’ll be announcing the winners of last week’s De La Soul ticket comp, (and possibly giving away a couple more tix if you guys are really good!) as well as catching up with Minuit, Cornerstone Roots and Deva Mahal!
COAST no longer a live show … instead we are pre-recorded on a Wednesday night. The studio still has an open-door policy, so if anyone wants to come down and see the show being recorded, whilst getting up close with all the musos and our choice hosts, head on down anytime after 8.30pm on a Wednesday evening to the state-of-the-art MTS studios at 9-15 Davis Cres, Newmarket and see it all unfold.
And if you can’t make it down on a Wednesday (or you did come down and now you want to check yourself out on the TV), be watching Maori Television at the new time of 9.30pm on Thursday nights.
