Here is the latest music news from NZ On Air including the latest funding decisions.
Silver Anniversaries Celebrated
Happy Birthday to New Zealand’s oldest community radio station, Wellington Access Radio 783AM, which has just celebrated 25 years on air. The station began broadcasting just three hours a week on Radio New Zealand’s 2YB transmitter and now carries more than 120 programmes a month in over 30 languages.
Another well-loved institution turning 25 is the New Zealand Film Archive. It’s a good time to remember Jonathan Dennis, the first director and sole staff member, whose drive and passion put it on the map. The present collection is 100,000 titles, with 1500 hours a year going into the National Television Collection with NZ On Air funding.
Radio NZ Hits
Less than six months after its establishment, RNZ’s website is proving to be in high demand both here and overseas. The site offers live streaming of the National Radio and Concert FM networks, and on-demand services for flagship shows like Morning Report and Nine to Noon as well as text and audio news bulletins.
Each month the site gets up to 600,000 page impressions (the number of times a page is viewed) and more than 100,000 on-demand audio items are served. You can find it at http://www.radionz.co.nz/
Topping 20
New Zealand music content on commercial radio in the last full quarter - to 31 December 2005 - was 21.44% and the result for the 2005 calendar year was 20.77% - up on the previous year's 18.57%.
A voluntary target of 20% local content was set in 2002 through the NZ Music Code negotiated between the radio industry and the Government. The industry has hit that target a year ahead of schedule.
Our challenge will now be to maintain and grow that 20% in future years.
Five Times Table
The first of NZ On Air's new Phase Five international New Zealand music samplers - five acts, five songs and five music videos - was released in the US in January and in Australia in March. The first disc features songs by Pluto, The D4, The Bleeders, Goldenhorse and SJD.
Initial interest has centred on The D4 and their song 'Feel It, Like It', which has picked up play on 15 indie radio stations in the US (and a computer game synch licence!) But the most exciting development for the band is the possibility of a release deal in the UK and Europe as a result of the Phase Five exposure.
The second Five-by-Five sampler, featuring songs by Elemeno P, Die! Die! Die!, The Brunettes, The Phoenix Foundation and Anika Moa, was released in the US in March, just before the massive SXSW music festival in Austin, Texas where Die! Die! Die! and The Brunettes both played.
Save's Spins
In another Phase Five development, Greg Johnson’s song 'Save Yourself' is picking up some serious airplay in the US. At last count, the song had picked up 40 playlist adds and had debuted on the FMQB Triple A airplay charts. In the week of 22 February, the song was #43 on the charts with something like 238 spins.
NZ On Air is contributing towards the costs of the 'Save Yourself' radio plugging campaign in the US via our new Phase Five international New Zealand music promotion plan.
Well Deserved
Warmest congratulations to all those great New Zealanders recognised in the New Year’s Honours list, and in particular to those who have contributed so much in the areas with which NZ On Air is closely involved.
It’s wonderful to see the achievements of Ruth Harley, David Gascoigne, Tom Scott, Whirimako Black, Midge Marsden and Bic Runga recognised in this way.
