Music News - SXSW 2006 Update #2

SXSW 2006 Update #2

07 April 2006 - 0 Comments

Avotor have finished their US dates with Chicago instrumental beasts No Funeral – tour mates who will be coming to New Zealand in June. Avotor’s label Midium Records have also just signed a contract with renowned distributor CTD LTD for the USA. Midium Records looks after a roster including New Way Home and Jakob. The Chicago-based company are the distributors for the likes of Dischord, Matador, Constellation and Drag City.

Yet another band to hit the road on either side of the festival were The Bats, who played shows on both US coasts, and a couple of the country’s landlocked states too. SXSW Head Roland Swenson left The Pretenders to spend the final hour of the final night of SXSW Music watching The Bats’ official showcase, at which they garnered themselves an encore from a hugely enthusiastic audience. He was heard to remark, impressed, that "it's very, very rare to get an encore at South By" before heading off to buy the CD and meet the band. Burlington Free Press had this to say about the same show: “They soared all night, and because they were the last band of the night, they could veer from the tight SXSW schedule and play a couple of heavily demanded encore songs. Their final tune was a thrilling version of one of the best songs ever to come out of New Zealand, the hard-driving ‘North By North,’ a great way to end a night at South By Southwest.”

Having raised high expectations for her debut album (to be released later this year) Flip Grater has struck a deal with US-based website CDBaby.com for exclusive pre-release downloading of Flip's album which will see her getting premium profiling on their website.

After last being seen wandering off for a photo shoot in Austin, Flight Of The Conchords obviously turned up safe and sound as they have been supporting Bic Runga on her national tour. As for the aforementioned photo, it will be appearing in Time Magazine along with a story on the fellas in a few weeks’ time.

And finally, there’s another chance to help out the inferno-escaping Ryan McPhun & The Ruby Suns next week, with a Ryan McPhundraiser being held at the Schooner Tavern on Thursday April 20th. The Reduction Agents, Chris Knox & the Nothing, and The Nudie Suits are all mucking in to help, and so should you by being there!
