About Girls Rock! Poneke

Girls Rock! Poneke is the Wellington branch of an organisation that aims to disrupt the current gender imbalance in our music industry through a series of school holiday programmes for young women, trans, non-binary and gender-non-conforming youth.

The rock and roll holiday programme runs over a week, and provides young people with a chance to learn an instrument, join a band, and attend workshops run by a team of highly-regarded local musicians. This year due to Covid-19, alternative plans are in place for an equally awesome and interactive online programme, in case the ‘in-person’ camp at the Massey University campus is unable to go ahead.

"Why GR!? Because the most important thing to me is that everyone, regardless of gender, age, perceived skill level and background, get to discover how talented and cool they are in a safe and fun place!

Everyone has the capacity to make amazing music and I think Girls Rock! is a perfect place to discover that. Also it's just so much fun! Getting to be around this many talented, kind and inspiring people (both campers and adults) is my favourite week of the year." – Eliana Gray, GR! Mentor
