Returning from their fateful tour of the US during the Covid-19 state of emergency, Swallow The Rat prevail with the release of their album, a daze-inducing 10-track explosion of post-punk, and psych-shoegaze, Leaving Room. The LP, which explores ideas of loss, change, and disenfranchisement with modern life, was recorded with Nick Abbot at Northwestern (Foals, Robert Plant, Robyn).
With members from Austin, Texas, and Tamaki Makaurau, New Zealand, Swallow The Rat deliver a unique mix of New Zealand post-punk and Texan psychedelia, which isn’t surprising given the bands musical pedigree featuring the likes of My Education, Lost Rockets, Body Corporate and Deathbeam.
“While the NZ component of the band had never played together before this line up, as we have hung out we have realised we have been in the same room so many times over the years - we have a shared musical history that shows through when we play together” - Stephen Horsley
Since their formation in 2017, Swallow The Rat, comprised of members Sam Vercoe, Brian Purington, Hayden Fritchley and Stephen Horsley, have previously released a self-titled album, performed at SXSW, and opened for lauded acts No Age, Gang of Four, and Sebadoh, before signing with label Shifting Sounds early 2020.
