Today, Auckland-based neo-soul singer/songwriter Holly Afoa releases her debut EP Sister out on all digital streaming services. Following the release of R&B slow-burner Forget You feat. DSCNDNT, Holly Afoa has extended her repertoire into a larger, more soulful sound with five emotion-heavy tracks. Listen to the five-track EP here.
Sister encapsulates the complications that come with love. Each song on the EP is dedicated to a significant woman who has made an impact in Holly’s life, good and bad. From the opening title track the foundations are laid, “sister this one’s for you” and a plea to resolve unwarranted troubles. Sister expresses the stress of fighting with a loved one and the urge to accept differences and move on.
First single, UDiK covers more serious territory, capturing the stigma around depression. The repetition of the chorus lyrics “you don’t know” drives home the struggle of trying to help someone understand who hasn’t experienced it for themselves. Brooding piano chords and floating guitar melodies reign with a touch of neo-soul rhythms and basslines throughout.
Closing track, Mum, Dad, I'm A Lesbian is an ode to feeling different and not "suitable enough" for your loved ones. The song champions being yourself through the dialogue of someone who struggles to feel comfortable in their own skin. Swelling variations extend from minimal instrumentation to reverb-soaked guitars, climaxing to angelic harmonies before settling into a dream-like state.
Sister is available to stream on your favourite streaming service.
