Kirikiriroa's Valere drops their beautifully RnB-infused pop pearl, Like That, a track that was written, recorded and produced over one day during 2018’s Songhubs Sphere hosted by APRA and Chelsea Jade.
Like That was inspired by the feeling of love’s longing, confusion, wondering, and nods to the sounds of pioneering female artists of the late 90’s and early millennium, Aaliyah, Ashante and Mya, injected with a fresh Valere twist.
Speaking of her experience writing the track during Songhubs, Valere says, “I had the pleasure of working with Laura Bettinson (lau.ra), Emma Logan (October) and Brooke Singer (French For Rabbits), with Cass Mitchell on the bass. It was an incredible experience, really organic.
“Initially, I only had the chorus idea, inspired by a pink sunset I saw, the painting Married by Dendy Sadler, and conceptually, wondering whether a love interest thought about you the same way.
“The Songhubs session made this come alive! We were set in a beautiful studio space in Roundhead with Japanese floral dividers and a haiku coffee book we used for lyrics, and it was honestly feminine magic!”
Valere is a songwriter and producer based in Auckland, New Zealand, who brings together an eclectic and addictive mix of synth, soul and RnB flair.
“Valere means ‘to be worth’. This is the heart of her message, one that speaks about finding worth in the right place and the journey of the search” - Radio Republic
