Ivy Lies recently completed the recording of their debut album Little Mind Games and it seems that listening to this album it will definitely remain on your mind. The girls of Ivy Lies have perfected pop-rock with high energy, aggressive drums and assertive rock guitar, making music that makes you pound your invisible drum sticks. I love this album because Ivy Lies have some very similar characteristics to my first love, indie rock chick band ‘The Donna’s’ but much to the credit of these stunning musicians do not mistake or limit them to just being ‘chick rock,’ because with the drum-centric music they produce Ivy Lies are definitely all about the rock!
The best thing about Little Mind Games is that although 4 of the songs have had huge releases, those released songs are not the only stand out’s on the album.
Never Enough is definitely the best choice for a lead off track, great lyrics and showcases the bands ability to play, tight and cohesive music. They write music and lyrics in a sweet but don’t mess with me way.
Church Tower really demonstrates the power and passion of Ivy Lies. If I wasn’t pre-disposed to knowing they were a rock band, I would say it was nothing short of a stunning ballad. It is evident that these girls have a diverse musical talent that can produce not only catchy rock tunes but also pure rock ballads.
Something Out Of Nothing changes up the tempo pushing out the drums and follows their first single Addicted, which was released over 2 years ago. If this is the product of 2 years of making music and maturity then we have a lot to look forward to in the future of Ivy Lies.
Hope For The Best reverts to that more classic angsty indie chick rock that makes bands earn their credibility, earnest and honest lyrics that are in no way sugar coated or too sweet to not be in the top 40.
Dead Head is my personal pick for best unreleased song on this album it is a combination of thumping bass drum and unfolding guitar riffs. Little Mind Games is one beautiful mind game with attitude and flair that needs to be played.
Ivy Lies are a three piece all girl rock/pop band from Auckland, New Zealand, that play upbeat hooky pop tunes with harmonious melodies and a solid rock edge.
Originally formed by Lisa, Emla and Rosie under the name 'Starlett' when the girls were still in school, the band caught the eye of SonyBMG. The development deal that followed led to the release of two singles, ‘What I Had’ and ‘Let It Go’, both receiving heavy airplay on commercial radio and music television.
In 2007 the band underwent a number of changes. They packed up their worldly possessions and moved from the genteel sophistication of Christchurch to New Zealand's Big Smoke: Auckland.
