Ladi6 - Ladi6 Live at The Powerstation, Auckland, 13/07/13

27 Jul 2013 // A review by Dilemma

There is one thing that I look forward to every summer and that is the NZ Music summer tours, and this year I had to wait until July for Ladi6 who is definitely a favourite of mine when she graces us with her definitive presence. She paired with @Peace at Auckland's Powerstation, in an interesting NZ collaboration of low freq beats and impressive rhyming skills. @Peace started off the night with a playful but solid 40 minute set that reverberated through the room and on ending received an enthusiastic applause.

Waiting for Ladi6 (Karoline Tamati, the 6th girl in her family hence the name) there is much anticipation and the atmosphere is always electric, what will she be wearing, will she play Bang Bang? It never ceases to amaze me how much presence one person, some drums and a microphone can have. It also never ceases to amaze me that each time I see Ladi6 on stage it is so much better than the last, her repertoire of songs and ability to drop an unforgettable set is like no other female MC in NZ. She is also an impressive figure on stage, always stylish and elusive in the sense of she is so calm. empowered and really just so cool.

This night was very special, Ladi6 kicked out some old fan favs Like Water, Call You Out and 98 Til Now, which got the crowd pumped dancing and singing like everyone knew the words and introduced the crowd to her new album Automatic which is to be released on August 16th. The title track of Automatic was outstanding and is branching our into a new style of experimentally tingly tracks on the album, including the recently released Shine On and the first single Ikarus, which with the same hype of Like Water seeing the crowd sway with swag fully captivated. But don’t get me wrong, there are still the classic Ladi6 beats provided by an immensely talented backing band including producer Parks Brent, @Peace keys player Brandon Haru, and the rhythm master Julien Dyne. This ensemble is a force to be reckoned with, and only gets better. Watch out on August 16thfor the new album and hopefully another summer tour!

About Ladi6

Ladi6 (Karoline Tamati) is one of New Zealand's premier vocalists and MCs. Starting her musical career in Christchurch, Ladi6 was part of the all-girl hip-hop group Sheelahroc. Sheelahroc had the hit track 'If I Gave You The Mic' and Ladi6 was nominated for Best Vocalist/MC at the 2003 bNet Music Awards.

Ladi6 then moved to Auckland with her band Verse Two who quickly gained a reputation as a top New Zealand live soul/hip-hop group. They won the bNet Best New Act Award in 2004, toured New Zealand with packed shows and supported international acts such as The Roots and De La Soul. Ladi6's vocals feature on stand-out tracks by some of Aotearoa's finest talent, including Shapeshifter, Scribe, Fat Freddy's Drop and 50Hz.

"There is something about her (Ladi 6), something about her voice and something about the way she carries herself and her attitude that is so nice and so beautiful". - Sam Trevethick, Real Groove

Tali AKA Natalia Sheppard is pretty impressive, she paired up with Roni Size to release Lyric on my Lip which smashed the charts in 2002, became the first female MC to release an album in 2004 over 10 years ago. She has won the Best Female DNB MC award a few times (3) and has just released her new album Wolves, which she describes as “electronic soul and gangsta jazz"!

Jayson Norris - Save My Soul EP Review
16 May 2014 // by Dilemma
New from Jayson Norris is the Save My Soul EP as part of NZ Music Month. If you are a fan of Kora style rock or Tiki Taane melodies then you will love this five-song EP, cleverly incorporating roots and the groove of mainstream guitar rock’n’soul to blur genres.

Estère - Estere Album Review
10 May 2014 // by Dilemma
Released as a free download via Bandcamp the debut EP from Wellington singer/songwriter/beatmaker/producer Estere is definitely unique in the NZ music scene. Self-described as “just a girl with an MPC” Estere works her equipment and the product is individualistic, raw and worthy of a listen this NZ Music Month.
