31 Oct 2016 // A review by Matt Mutinous
Released: November 5th, 2016 Two guitars, a drum kit, and a whole stage load of awesomeness, Waikato based alternative grunge pop outfit
Cheshire Grimm have been rocking up and down the country, ever since they formed in 2012. Playing numerous shows and recently supporting acts such as Cherie Currie (The Runaways) and
Ladi6. This female fronted four-piece has since stood out among the up and
coming New Zealand rock acts.
With the release of their self-titled E.P in early 2015, they have surprised us yet again with their brand new single
Awaken. Recently announced to be the first track from their forthcoming EP,
Rain or Shine, due for release early next year.
The journey begins with a notable dose of funk within the bouncing bass line, accompanied by mysterious guitar riffs that bring about a sense of curiosity right from the get go. We are pulled further into the song by a jazzed up punk beat with a topping of sweet, vocal harmonies and soothing guitar strum chorus.
The song is structurally sound with seriously catchy verses that will leave you humming along for days to come. The explosion of the solo transcends us into a truly epic display of psychedelic guitar work, revealing the fantastic production behind this powerful ballad.
Noticeably different from their previous work, this single is an exciting example of the evolution of sound we can expect from this band's future releases. Its ability to provide emotion with a feel good vibe makes this song a definite dynamic to the ear and a must add to the summer playlist.
North Island tour dates with friends and fellow rockers
Skinny Hobos and
Armed in Advance starting
this December, are set to celebrate the release of this single and see the band returning to the stage, stronger than ever before.
