Six Twos - EP Review: Anchors
The quintessential So Cal punk rock scene has always been a prominent and thriving scene, and it appears it’s alive and well even over our shores, and in particular, Mount Maunganui.
Six Two’s has been a band since 2020 in the thick of multiple lockdowns and a shared love of punk rock in general and this is their second EP, Anchors.
Like any good punk rock, Six Two’s tick all the boxes for hard, fast, in your face riffs and distortion and solid drumming, but with some distinction as heard on last track of the EP, Game of Pricks. A definite stand out that mixes equal parts punk ferocity with insanely melodic vocals and tempo. Think early Weezer but if Weezer were straight up punk and part of the cool kid's club at school.
Clicking repeat for the fourth time, opening track, the titular Anchors, is what I can best describe as a punk rock sea shanty. One so good, even Captain Pugwash would be on board with.
Following that, is recently released single, Cuts. Another jam with an infectious chorus, made for a sing a long but also has heart.
Another stand out on this EP is Here To Stay. A meaty bass line kicks things off that then opens to some hard, fast times. It’s catchy, and also has heart, but still never strays from that punk rock sensibility. It’s a banger.
In a four track EP, Six Two’s are again reigning strong, and while 2023 is nearly over, punk rock isn’t, and I love that.
