Audiosauce

Bio

Wellington-based Miles Tilly aka Audiosauce has been a busy man since the release of Diversecity, the first Audiosauce album and Capital Recordings' first single artist release, back in July 2002.

Work began in August 2002, a mere six weeks after the release of his first album, with Contimental Drift being envisioned by Miles as a more varied piece than Diversecity. The underlying theme was of skipping through a crackly old radio, hence the use of interludes and the broad range of musical styles and elements, ranging from instrumental hip-hop to drum & bass to jazzy broken beats to soulful electronic folk to chunky house beats and all musical destinations beyond.

While the central theme remained, the core of the album has changed and changed and changed again over the course of the last two years, as Miles revised and expaned the scope of his original idea. Vocals were recorded with Miss Tyc aka Bex Riley (singer on the hit What’s Down Low by Bailtercell & Timmy Schumacher), a 12” with four of the tracks from the album was released (the Covert Operation EP), two videos were completed with animator Paul Herschell, including the award winning Bee Bo (Special Commendation for Animation, Kodak Music Clip Awards 2003) and Miles made it to the finals of the 2003 Heineken Found at Thirst DJ/producer competition.

Finally the 24 tracks that comprise Contimental Drift were pulled together, then sequenced as the madness turned into method. Mastering was given over to the more than capable hands of 50Hz, and sleeve design once again to Tana Mitchell.

The result is an album, that while working within the various realms of contemporary beat-based music, is a thoroughly cohesive and enjoyably understated masterpiece, which continues to reward the listener with each and every play. This beautiful album comes highly recommended, especially for fans of other such NZ delights as 50Hz, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Soane, Shapeshifter, Flash Harry, Sola Rosa, Minuit, Nomad and of course the various Loop and Capital compilations. Kudos must go to both Miles and Capital Recordings - this is a world class release.

Posted: Wed Sep 10, 2003 8:05 am
Audio Sauce video-maker Paul Herschell talks about animating bouncing eyeballs and an insect army on Flipside, TV2, 6pm & 10.30pm, Thursday Sept 4. There'll also be the debut screening of the new Audio Sauce track/video 'Come and Get Me' featuring Miss Tyc on vocals.

This track features on Capital Recordings new '#05' compilation (due out Sept 15 through BMG) and also the 'Audio Sauce' 12" vinyl EP (due out early October through Rhytmethod Distribution). Paul's video for Audio Sauce' 'Bee Bo' won the Special Commendation for Animation at the 2003 Kodak Music Clip Awards in July, and it's also a finalist for Best Video in the 2003 B-Net Awards and a finalist in Radio Active's Handle The Jandal (for non-NZ on Air-funded videos) competition. Go the Herschell!
