Formed in 2002 as a tight 4 piece punk outfit, Army of Darkness was a reaction to the dull predictability that plagues the New Zealand music scene.
Playing early shows with bands such as The Mint Chicks and underground legends Missing Teeth, AOD quickly gained a reputation for their ridiculous live shows and unique sound. Their songs struck a chord with all who experienced them, fast and energetic with topics everyone can relate to; politics, love, the horrific, death and retribution.
After recruiting a second guitarist, Ollie, the band set about their first recording, The result was Dellamorte Dellamore a 7 song EP released on green vinyl. The record combined the metal guitar wizardry bought to the table by Ollie with the energy, excitement and charisma already present in the band. bFM DJs quickly warmed to the record with sing along Gypsy Devil Woman and the manic Evil Dead gaining high rotation. The limited edition record became a prize amongst vinyl collectors, elevating the band to cult status.
A line-up change in 2004 saw the replacement of original guitarist Myles with Mike Bastard and the recruitment of schoolgirl violinist Mihka, further developing the unique sound of the band. AOD have played shows around NZ with a variety of bands ranging from 8 Foot Sativa to Deja Voodo.
