Smashproof’s Brother, which topped the New Zealand charts 10 years ago in a record run, still holds the record for the longest running New Zealand #1 single.
Smashproof first catapulted to fame in 2009 when their debut single, Brother (featuring Gin Wigmore) reached #1 on the Top 40 Singles Chart in New Zealand. It went on to hold the position for a staggering 11 weeks, receiving triple platinum certification.
Brother featured on the album, The Weekend, which was released later that year (via Move The Crowd Records/Universal Music) and debuted at #3 on the Top 40 Albums Chart in New Zealand and is certified Gold. It was recognised by writer Nick Bollinger in his book as one of NZ’s Essential 100 Albums. That same year, Smashproof won three New Zealand Music (Tui) Awards, including the coveted People’s Choice, Highest Selling Single and Best Video (Chris Graham). The second single off the album, Ordinary Life is also certified gold and the 3rd single, It’s Friday, was also a top 20 hit.
Four years later Smashproof reunited to release the EP Forever, which featured the iTunes #1 Paint Fade featuring Drew and Survivors featuring Pieter T’ which won The Pacific Music Award’s APRA Best Pacific Song and Best Pacific Video (again with Chris Graham) in 2015.
Getting together over numerous sessions during 2019 as part of their 10 year celebrations, Smashproof wrote and recorded a range of songs together and have decided to release them. ‘It was great to get back in the studio and write together’ says group member Deach. ‘We have grown up, and moved on down different life paths, but we still have the chemistry to write awesome songs together as a group’.
Recognised for their heartfelt, socially poignant, and memorable music, Smashproof comprises of Sidney Diamond (Sid Diamond – formerly Young Sid), Tyree Tautogia (TY) and Fred Fa’afou (Deach). The trio are South Aucklanders of Maori/Cook Island Maori, Niuean, and Samoan heritage.
Since 2009, All three group members have successfully forged their own solo careers, and continue to perform across New Zealand and Australia on a regular basis.

Smashproof set to break 23 year old chart record Posted: Sat Apr 25, 2009 11:44 am Smashproof (Deach, Tyree and Young Sid) have taken New Zealand by storm with their platinum-selling debut single ‘Brother’, and this week the trio cemented themselves in New Zealand music history by equalling a long-standing chart record. With the release of today’s NZ Top 40 Singles Chart comes the news that Smashproof have held onto the #1 spot for the ninth week in a row! This remarkable achievement means Smashproof are poised to set a new record for the longest consecutive run at #1 by an NZ artist if ‘Brother’ is still at the top next week… ‘Brother’ currently shares the record set by the single ‘Sailing Away’ (released by All Of Us in 1986); Smashproof fans now have the opportunity to re-write history and shatter this 23 year old record! |
