After a lockdown-induced hiatus, Auckland-based alt RnB band, The BackChat return with two new songs. This is their second release, following their 2019 self-titled EP.
Band members Bekah (vocalist), Michael (bassist), and Evon (guitarist), present a soulful release that shows a development in their sound and a move toward pop production. They offer up a spacious and slinky mix of old-school hip-hop and modern indie rock to create a fresh new take on Alt RnB. The three band members each come from different musical backgrounds, but it’s their united love of hip-hop influences like Anderson Paak., Erykah Badu, Childish Gambino and The Internet that tie the whole thing together.
Their lead single Effortless is a sultry, emotive track sprinkled with dubby flute and a driven bassline. The jazzy, spaced-out guitar compliments the vocal as listeners are pulled through a journey of lust and connection.
The BackChat’s second single, Conspirator was written in the midst of lockdown. The track captures the listener in the emotion of the last two years. Released alongside a new music video, Conspirator explores the frustration, angst, and confusion of being at a standstill, unsure of who to blame.
The two songs, Conspirator and Effortless, will be released on Friday 12 August 2022. A music video for Conspirator is being released on Friday 19 August 2022.
The tracks are available on all streaming platforms..
Both songs have been co-produced with Pierre Beasley, mixed by Morgan Allen, and mastered by Luke Finlay.
