One Hit At A Time: The Means Release Debut EP.
With an inimitable sound best described as groove-based music, featuring tasteful soul-infused melodies from a host of guest vocalists, The Means are about to tattoo a teardrop onto the face of New Zealand music. Three outstanding musicians have joined forces to create a project far-reaching in its scope and ambition. The Means is at once a band, a production unit, a burgeoning empire, and a philosophy. All of this will be revealed on November 1st with the release of The Ends EP.
An ethos of uncompromising dedication to quality both in their live and recorded work has seen them foster relationships and collaborate with a wide range of talent for their upcoming release. Vocalists featured are Esther Stephens, Rachel Fraser, Jessie Cassin, and Courtney Meredith. Keys maestro Steph Brown of Lips, and production guru Aaron Nevezie (The Bunker Studio, NYC) has also lent his talent to the project.
“Each one of these tracks has been approached as potential singles”, states band member Abe Kunin. “So much so in fact, that the working titles for our first productions were affectionately dubbed 'Hit 1-6'”.
Their debut single Say The Same, dropped in early 2013 was accompanied by a self-produced video created by the disturbingly talented Oliver Rose. The song is forward-thinking yet timeless, bookended by spoken words from the celebrated young poet Courtney Meredith, and utilizing a paradox of sonic aesthetics, organic and machine-like. Those wanting comparison may invoke the likes of Frank Ocean, SBTRKT, or Kanye West, but when combined with the clip’s intimate, surreal, and sometimes morbid imagery, The Means create a persona all their own.

Two subsequent single leaks Love Me Not, and Good Things and latest single Modern Marvel have all pricked discerning ears over the course of the year.
The Ends is a universal collaboration brimming with fiendish grooves, superior songwriting, production, and musicianship. This is serious business.
The Ends is released via Young Gifted & Broke. Pre-sales are now available via iTunes and physical pre sales via Amplifier. The band will celebrate with an EP release show tonight October 31st at Backbeat Bar at 7.30pm.
The Means are:
Tom Broome
Abraham Kunin
Marika Hodgson
'The Flaming Lips meets J Dilla.' Aaron Nevezie
‘Lost in that 32 bar crescendo, sobbing in perfect harmony to Marika Hodgson’s lower end, drowning in the infinite sadness that is Tom Broome’s beard while Abe Kunin chokes you slowly to death with his guitar strings you’ll forget that existence is but a slow peril to an ever- imminent death’. Tom Scott
