Art-pop trio Birdfeeder released their first EP The Vile Isle on January 28 through Bandcamp and digital streaming services. It’s a companion project to their live show, The Veiled Isle, which will appear in the NZ Fringe Festival in Wellington February 24 -27, and in the South Island at dates and places yet to be announced.
The Vile Isle will be Birdfeeder’s first release since their singles Banana Boxes (2020) and The Long Haul (2021). The five tracks were produced by the band, recorded and mixed by Warwick Donald and mastered by Munki Studios.
The Vile Isle has been several years in the making – the first track, Ocean of Sand, was written in 2017, and recording began in December 2020. Finishing the EP was delayed as Birdfeeder spent a large part of 2021 working on The Veiled Isle for Lōemis, an independent midwinter arts festival in Wellington produced by Pirate and Queen.
The Veiled Isle is conceived of as a live visual album, where Birdfeeder’s songs are animated by multi-layered shadow puppetry as the band plays behind a giant projection screen. The Veiled Isle has not been seen by audiences since its debut performance in June 2021, and will be performed in Te Auaha’s Tapere Nui theatre on February 24-27.
Birdfeeder was formed in 2019 by long time friends and musical collaborators Stephanie Cairns (keys/vocals, lead songwriting), Josh Harris (drums) and Marley Mokomoko-Young (bass). They are gathering a reputation for catchy songwriting and a quirky visual aesthetic with their live shows and two self-produced music videos for Banana Boxes (2020) and The Long Haul (2021).
