Taranaki band Edge of The Woods release new music video during lockdown

22 August 2021 - 0 Comments

While pubs have been shut and music gigs cancelled New Zealand wide, one Taranaki band is livening up lockdown with fresh music and a new music video. Following the successful release of their debut EP in 2020, Taranaki based band, Edge Of The Woods now follows this up with the release of a new single Gone Are The Days.

Their EP Lookin’ For Somethin has impressed critics online including Kev Rowland from www.muzic.net.nz :

“They bring together folk, alt-blues. Americana and roots in a way that feels so incredibly real and honest.

There is a delicacy within this EP, yet also a hidden core, and this resonates with the listener who understands this is reality, real music being performed by real musicians with no studio trickery.”

Lead singer Wes James said lockdown changed the original plan to release the new video and song in September. "We thought it would be a great chance to share a new track whilst people are staying at home, bringing the music to them.”

Add the band's drummer, Jarrod Hooper agreed “these lockdowns are often a time of reflection for many while facing an uncertain future”. “...we hope this song will help others to focus on their own personal journeys with a more positive outcome during these challenging times”.

The new track, Gone Are The Days, continues with Edge Of The Woods' authentic sound. It is the first song to be released from a recent recording session with Scallywag Records, which captured the live and raw sound of the band on eight new original tracks.

Gone Are The Days is a classic break-up song realized in an acoustic-soft rock format. Lead singer Wes James wrote the song back in 2007 after returning from living overseas and reflecting on the end of a romantic relationship. In early 2020, Edge Of The Woods rehearsed and developed the song from a solo acoustic track to a full band arrangement.

The verses feature introspective lines showing the loss and awareness of feelings of self doubt but also feigning indifference. The chorus features the mantra-like passage “Gone Are The Days” outlining a contemplative realization that the relationship is over and that it can often take a while for a person to fully comprehend that their relationship is over.

The song was recorded in one take at Drum Tech Studios in New Plymouth. Scallywag Records' sound engineer and producer Aidan Courtnell travelled down from Auckland to capture the audio with a mobile recording setup.

And there's more good lockdown news for fans as Edge Of The Woods will be releasing more singles from the eight tracks recorded with Scallywag Records.

Gone Are The Days will be available on all streaming platforms on September 3rd. For now, you can watch and listen to the track's official music video.
