Music News - A concert for Darfur ready to kick off

27 September 2007 - 0 Comments

People still have time to purchase tickets for the New Zealand Red Cross Concert for Darfur and take advantage of the pre-sale ticket price of $10.

The music event takes place tomorrow evening at the San Francisco Bathhouse in Cuba Street, starting at 8 o’clock.

Ten bands from African drummers to blues musicians will take to the stage to raise money for Red Cross operations in Darfur.

Musician Sam Manzanza is behind the idea for the concert and will be one of the acts performing, along with Hannah Howes, Marg Layton & Friends, Olmecha Supreme, Jonathan Crayford & Myele Manzanza, Batucada and Jinetero, among others.

New Zealand Red Cross event co-ordinator, Amy Dawson, says a great deal of thanks goes out to Sam Manzanza and the concert sponsors. Thanks to Phantom Billstickers Ltd, Real Groovy, Havana Coffee, Trade Aid, Radio Active 89FM, K&M Print and Toolbox Creative.

“The support from everyone has been fantastic; everyone has given their time willingly and without question to support the cause. The concert provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the ongoing crisis in Sudan, and allows us here in New Zealand to do our bit to help,” said Amy.

Sudan is the ICRC’s largest humanitarian operation worldwide. It is believed that more than two million people in the country have been forced to flee their homes in recent years due to conflict.

The need for protection and assistance in Sudan is enormous but the volatile security situation has often disrupted humanitarian work and deprived those in need of vital aid.

Tickets are available for $10 at New Zealand Red Cross, Trade Aid, Real Groovy Records, Cuba Street, and Kwanzaa, The Afrikan Shop, Manners Street, Wellington. Door sales will also be available on the night for $15.
