Auckland-based songwriter Tom Cunliffe returns with We Had It All, the lead single off his third album Secret Exhibition due for release later this year.
LISTEN TO WE HAD IT ALL:
Hypnotic nylon string guitar provides the heartbeat, while Tom’s aching vocal performance is adorned with piercing guitar riffs and embellished with even more lush strings. Always the romantic, Cunliffe’s imagery is of great distances, wreckages, ruins and reunions.
“The song is a celebration of nostalgia. I wanted to preserve a moment in time that I knew couldn’t last forever.”
Written and arranged in Tom’s home studio in Titirangi, Secret Exhibition was then crafted exquisitely by a team of talented artists at The Lab in Mt Eden.
Produced by Dave Khan (Marlon Williams, Reb Fountain), who also provided multi-instrumental talents; Secret Exhibition is rich in accomplished musicians - Eamon Edmundson-Wells (Louisa Nicklin) on double bass, Tom Broome (Tami Neilson, TEEKS) on drums and Tom Cunliffe on guitar, piano and vocals, then mixed in Melbourne by Dan Luscombe (Courtney Barnett, Marlon Williams).
The song is accompanied by a mysterious animated video, featuring a Weka and the iconic Huntly DEKA sign, and is available to watch on YouTube.
We Had It All is just a taste of what’s to come from Tom this year. It is the sound of an artist maturing, building on the impressive body of work already in place with his first two records Howl & Whisper (2016) and Template for Love (2018).
