A driving rhythm section is matched with layers of delicate finger picking guitars, as well as splashes of ear candy, taking the form of slide guitar and harmonics. Willy Ferrier’s vocals are dripping with gravelly feeling; injecting a hint of nostalgia into the upbeat single as he explores the idea of moving through life “blissfully unaware of how good we have it.”
“Not often do we know in the moment, that the best days of our lives are upon us,” reflects Willy. “These Are The Days is a poignant reminder to live in the moment.”
Written in Mangawhai, recorded at Roundhead Studios in Tāmaki Makaurau, produced by Connor Jaine (Mako Road, Flaxxies, Casper, Summer Thieves, Dolphin Friendly) and made with support from NZ On Air, These Are The Days came together as the band realised “just how good we had it to be up north, writing and recording our second album in such an idyllic spot.”
These Are The Days is the fifth and final single to come from No Cigar’s anticipated forthcoming album The Great Escape, following the cruisy track Cool, which is currently sitting at #14 on the Hot NZ Singles Chart. Previous to this was the raw and punchy single Concubine - which was quickly added to Radio Hauraki and The Rock - and the melancholic track The Vibrance (Somebody To Blame). Make It Better, the first single, debuted at #11 on the NZ Hot 40 Singles Chart and received widespread local media support, including a feature on Rolling Stone Magazine.
No Cigar have quickly risen in the ranks of the New Zealand music industry as a band to watch. After recently releasing their debut album Bienvenido in September 2022, the band have gone on and played at some of New Zealand’s most exciting music festivals and sold out New Zealand and Australian tours over the last summer. The band is currently touring the northern hemisphere playing headline shows in the UK and Europe; their London show selling out in less than a day. While across Europe they have sold more than 1000 tickets.
With singles 1999, Some Nights and Say No More playlisted on ZM, Radio Hauraki and The Edge, No Cigar’s infectious chiller tunes have fast become a favorite with fans locally and abroad. Their track record has amassed over 6 million streams on Spotify alone and gained a monthly listenership of 145,000+ fans.
Today’s release is the final taste of what’s to come before their anticipated sophomore album The Great Escape is unveiled on November 24. “We’ve given a solid smorgasbord of what’s to come across the five singles to date,” says Willy. “The additional album tracks you’ll see on November 24 have their own flavour which certainly align nicely with this track.” The soundtrack of the summer is about to drop - get ready!
