Sunshine Motel is the new single by New Zealand artist Eden Iris, who has been described as “an artist who is always in a tune of her own” (Come Here Floyd). It is the first in a series of singles which Eden will be releasing in 2024.
Upon sharing an acoustic demo of Sunshine Motel on social media earlier in the year, Eden knew she wanted to give some decent love and time to the record. She then brought in New Zealand producer Ben King to co-produce the song, who she had always wanted to work with. Sunshine Motel was recorded partially in Los Angeles and Auckland, and features musicians such as Tom Broome (drums), Phoebe Silva (violin), David Landau (cello), Ben King (electric guitar) and a string arrangement by Richard Collins.
In the quiet desolation of a deserted motel, the lyrics for Sunshine Motel were born. “The song is about not wanting to leave a comfortable, familiar place. The imagery in the lyrics came from a poem I wrote while staying at a hotel in southern California. It was scorching hot, and the place was surrounded by desert, mountains, and fields with dead grass and cacti. During the middle of the day, while most of the other guests were out exploring the town, it felt like I was the only one in the whole place. It was sort of lonely, serene, and cinematic all at the same time. I knew I wanted to write about that feeling.” — Eden Iris
Eden Iris is a New Zealand artist “with the ambition to carve out her own niche on the immense tree of folk-inspired music” (Tobi, Demerara Records). Recording and producing out of her home studio, Eden combines her love of infectious pop melodies and the grit of Americana stringed instruments to create a unique and mesmerising storytelling experience for her audience.
Moving to Los Angeles at twenty years-old with just a suitcase and a guitar, Eden’s music has taken her to cities such as Nashville, Austin, and New Orleans, to perform and co-write with established songwriters. Commanding a strong live performance with her unique rhythm guitar technique, she has also supported touring artists such as Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Gin Wigmore (You Are Us Concert, LA, 2019).
Eden released her debut album The Fuchsia & the Grey in April, 2021. The album was described by Buzzbands LA as “ethereal-folk-pop”, and was received warmly by her fanbase and bloggers such as Trust the Doc (Exile FM). “This gem is an unusual and uplifting anthem for grief” - Caesar Live N Loud. Eden was awarded the Folk/Acoustic Act of the year (2020) by UK based radio-station Radio Wigwam, and was a winner of the International Songwriting Competition “Inspire Your Songs” Category (May 2021). In late 2023, she moved back to New Zealand to connect with her roots, where she continues to dedicate her time to writing songs.
