Music News - NZ On Air Funding Announced

NZ On Air Funding Announced
NZ Music Month pulled in great radio statistics!

22 June 2002 - 0 Comments

The last NZ On Air music funding round for the funding year (to 30 June) gives us 14 new music videos, 8 new recording artists and 7 new radio hits projects - a total of $145,000 for music projects to stoke the Kiwi music fires at radio.

PHASE FOUR ALBUMS AND INTERNATIONAL MARKETING:

No new album projects out of this round because NZ On Air have run out of budget until the new funding year (01 July). However, there is one new International Marketing project that will be announced next week when the details are sorted out - watch this space!

MUSIC VIDEOS:

This was not as tough as the last round when there were 93 applications, but it was close. The second toughest round of all time - 84 applications.

Of the 84, 58 made it to the shortlist. But in this last round for the funding year, we only have the budget to do 13-14 projects.

Each project will get $5,000 to make a music video. Decisions are based on airplay potential after testing the songs with music video broadcasters and taking into accound current radio priorities. They are:

* Nesian Mystik - 'Friday Night'
* Fuce - 'Restless'
* Splitter - 'You're Right To Rock'
* Fast Crew - 'Mr Radio'
* Hilt - '274 Whitney'
* Gramsci - 'This Ain't A Lovesong'
* Dubious Bros - 'Rage'
* Katchafire - 'Giddy Up'
* Mighty Scoop - 'Stay Awake'
* Subware - 'Into'
* Theo - 'Little Angel'
* Ben King - 'No Ordinary Boy'
* Salmonella Dub - 'Problems'
* Rubicon - 'All Or Nothing'

NEW RECORDINGS:

Another 8 new recording projects out of a massive mailbag of 170 applications. It has never been that big! The previous all-time high was 155 in October 200.

Each project will get $5,000 to record a song for radio. Decisions are based on commercial radio airplay potential, using commercial radio expertise, experience and testing the songs with commercial radio programmers. They are:

* Evermore - 'Don't Turn Away'
* Lavina - 'Higher Lovin''
* Mama Said - 'Elements'
* Craig McKenzie - 'Funky Little Hip Hop Angel'
* New Damage - 'Change'
* Oska - 'Mi Casa Es Su Casa'
* Spa - 'Neil Of Diamonds'
* Hendrix Warren - 'Empty'

RADIO HITS:

(Based on airplay in the January/March 2002 quarter)

Another 7 Radio Hits rebates for songs that have picked up significant airplay on commercial radio in the first quarter of 2002. Each project will get $5,000 (or the actual cost of recording and releasing the single, whichever is the lesser).

Decisions are based on analysing the RadioScope airplay charts which are in turn based on airplay returns from 146 radio stations around the country.

Note that songs that have picked up significant airplay in this quarter but have already been funded via the Phase Four Album or New Recording schemes (eg 'Communicate' by The Feelers, 'Taken' by Stellar*, 'Did You Do It All For Love' by Nurture, 'Random' by Che Fu, 'Nothing New' by Tadpole, 'Sleepy News' by Betchadupa, 'Whale' by Eight & 'Nesian Style' by Nesian Mystik) are not eligible for Radio Hits funding as well. They are:

* K'Lee - 'Can You Feel Me?'
* Goodshirt - 'Sophie'
* Eye TV - 'Worse For Wear'
* Blindspott - 'Room To Breathe'
* Slim - 'Crumbling'
* Pluto - 'Hey Little'
* The D4 - 'Party'

That's it for this funding year. Over the last 12 months we have done 101 music videos, 29 radio hits rebates, 49 new recording artist project, 14 phase four albums and 6 phast four international marketing projects.

That is also it for the second Phase Four year. In two years we have done 89 new recording artists altogether, 28 album projects and 9 international marketing projects. That's 179 actual or potential commercial radio hits from 103 different recording artists.

And it's showing on air. NZ music content on commercial radio in the January/March 2002 quarter was 13.19% (including Rock radio at a fabulous 25.39%)

In May (NZ Music Month) the week of 26 May (the week after NZ Music Week on commercial radio) NZ Music content reached unprecendented peaks:

* Adult Contemporary - 16.07%
* Pop - 21%
* Rock - 29.55%
* Alternative - 51.68&

And overall it was 20.01%.

Thank you to New Zealand Radio and TV for getting right behind NZ Music Month this year, and for keeping the home fires burning so brightly.

And thank you to those wonderful New Zealand recording artists who are making the great music that is filling the commercial radio airwaves at the moment - Bic Runga, Anika Moa, Goodshirt, Pacifier, Nesian Mystik, PanAm, Betchadupa, Stellar*, K'Lee, Che Fu, The Feelers, Tadpole, The D4 and lots more.
