Singer and songwriter Arahi has paid tribute to the legendary Māori navigator Kupe, on a stirring new waiata of the same name, which is out today.
Listen to Kupe HERE
“The waiata captures the spirit of exploring new horizons and embracing the uncertainty that comes with discovery,” Arahi says of the track, which is delivered in te reo Māori. “It draws compelling parallels between Kupe’s adventures and our own journeys through life.”
The song Kupe was born from an APRA Songhubs session, in which artists are paired with fellow writers and producers. Often artists are paired with others they might not typically collaborate with - this combined with limited time to create, fosters an environment, which unleashes a wave of creative magic.
This magic is evident on Kupe, which saw Arahi working with an esteemed cast of writers and performers, including Noema Te Hau, Carwyn Ellis, Pere Wīhongi and Marika Hodgson.
"Kupe embodies a momentum of determination, gradually and consistently traversing sonic seas while building courage with each wave. The track evolves, narrating a story of discovery, ultimately reaching a glorious instrumental peak,” explains Arahi.
It’s apt that this collaboration, which is supported by Te Māngai Pāho, had Arahi pushing into new sonic territories. “It’s unique in terms of my music catalogue. It’s allowed me to stretch from my usual feels and genres,” he says.
Arahi adds that it’s also significant that Kupe crosses through multiple genres. “It’s fitting that the song is based on Kupe, the relentless explorer, as the song itself musically traverses through many worlds of music that I enjoy as a listener.”
Alongside the waiata is a video, made by Mark Russell. The video captures the relentless nature of Kupe’s exploration in an up-close way as well as emphasising the vibe and musicality of the track. It visually shows the determination that comes with the committed explorer mentality.
