"...his concerts are like a nice, iced chai latte: smooth, cool, but with plenty of spice." Entertain Me, Cheri Harris, Chronicle
"A powerhouse of eclectic guitar styles and genres, Gilewitz wears his influences well." 20th Century Guitar
"Ear-boggling" The Washington Post
"His quick wit and twisted sense of humor has made him an entertainer as well as a fine guitarist." Fingerstyle Guitar Magazine
GillaZilla Records announces the upcoming New Zealand tour for American fingerstyle guitarist Richard Gilewitz. He returns to New Zealand for his 9th tour for rousing concerts filled with amazing chops, humor, and a history of the acoustic guitar from blues to folk, traditional to classical and somewhere in between. Gilewitz is a lively entertainer with finger gymnastics while spinning yarns about his outlook on life and touring that are too unbelievable not to be true. His signature style delivers technical diversity of banjo style patterns, classical arpeggios, tapping, along with a rhythmic percussive approach. As this internationally acclaimed solo guitarist forges a new voice to include the expanse of his influences, he offers complex and energetic originals and well-known works that become stories from the guitar.
This 2014 tour also includes the exclusive North and South Island screenings of the John Fahey documentary, In Search of Blind Joe Death – the Saga of John Fahey. Gilewitz will present this outstanding film with a number of Fahey tunes and a brief discussion of the influence of Fahey on his career as well as many other musicians. The biographical documentary visually evokes the vision of a great artist and employs beautifully textured, non-linear, cinematic and thoroughly entertaining means that launch a wide audience into the universe constructed and inhabited by John Fahey. The film relies first and foremost on the music of John Fahey. With the active support and cooperation of both The John Fahey Trust and Dean Blackwood of Revenant Records, the second of Fahey’s own recording companies, the film presents a rich and otherwise inaccessible Fahey archive of musical recordings, moving images, photographs, prose and paintings. The visual archive of Fahey performing is very rich. The collection of photographs is equally extensive. This live action archive is further augmented by short animated sequences that evoke Fahey’s artistic, imagined universe
