Auckland-born, London-based songwriter and musician Ezra Vine landed one of the biggest airplays hits of 2013 and a #5 hit with his debut single Celeste. Now signed to Parlophone Records UK, Ezra Vine is poised to release his debut EP, Celeste on Friday, October 10.
Braver Than Most, the second single from the EP and highly anticipated follow up to Celeste is serviced to radio today, Monday, September 29.
Entirely self-recorded, written and produced at his home studio, Braver Than Most is another upbeat summer haze of a track where the uplifting folky harmonies of are set to Vine's vivid lyrical imagery.
The rest of the tracks on the EP were also recorded at home and then embellished with the help of UK producer Cam Blackwood (Florence + The Machine, George Ezra).
A multi-instrumentalist with the ability to express himself on sixteen different instruments, Vine plays almost everything on his recordings and his dedication to his music is utterly committed. He learned to play the piano, for example, by practising for ten hours a day for three months, his interest prompted by an obsession with Chopin and Rachmaninov. Although 'Celeste' is immediately identifiable as folk-pop, his other songs echo the literate musicality of many of his favourite artists: the emotional fragility of Jeff Buckley, the darkness of Leonard Cohen and the strident anthems of The National.
Initially enthused by The Byrds and David Bowie as a teenager when his fellow students listened exclusively to rap, Vine's journey included common musical landmarks - a teenage grunge band, time as a music student and a period as a session musician.
Encouraged by the positive reaction greeted to a collection of home-recorded instrumentals, Ezra Vine spent an industrious fortnight building the tracks into fully-fledged songs packed with his narrative, mythological lyrical style with Celeste and Braver Than Most representing immediate highlights. The new songs represented a new beginning with a new style; the conclusion of his artistic gestation. But disaster struck when Vine broke his neck after being thrown from a horse while filming a music video for a friend in 2012, his new material was therefore held back during a gruelling recovery period.
Ezra Vine is currently touring across Europe with Vance Joy including dates in Germany, France and all major cities in the UK, the band is making their way back down to New Zealand for the summer with dates to be announced soon.
The Celeste EP is released on Friday, October 10 and is available to pre-order on iTunes. All pre-orders will automatically receive an instant download of Braver Than Most.
