The Technical Award finalists for the 49th annual Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards have been announced by Recorded Music NZ with multi-talented musicians among those selected.
Joel Little is up for both Best Producer and Best Engineer for Lorde’s debut album Pure Heroine. Before collaborating with Lorde, Little rose to fame as a member of Goodnight Nurse.
The Best Producer category also features Thom Powers from The Naked and Famous who earns a nod for self-producing his band’s latest album In Rolling Waves.
Paquin lead singer Thomas Healy rounds out the Best Producer finalists for his efforts on Tiny Ruins’ album Brightly Painted One.
Hayden Taylor is fast becoming one of New Zealand’s most talented engineers - he is a finalist in the Best Engineer category for his work on Blacklistt’s self-titled album.
Veteren Doug Jane is also up for Best Engineer for Kiri Te Kanawa’s album Waiata.
A range of artistic designs feature as finalists for this year’s Best Album Cover.
Anna Taylor and Ken Clark are in the running for their photograph cover of Liam Finn’s The Nihilist and a surreal painting for Grayson Gilmour’s Infinite Life! has secured Henrietta Harris as a finalist.
The third spot was scooped up by Robert Wallace’s graphic design for the cover of Ladi6’s album Automatic.
Recorded Music NZ chief executive Damian Vaughan says: “It’s always great to recognise the hard work that goes on behind the scenes and it’s fantastic to see so many multi-talented artists working on the music as well as the production. These finalists are a big part of the New Zealand music industry.”

The winners of the Technical Awards are revealed at VNZMA Finalists Announcement at The Pullman Auckland on 16 October.
The line-up for this year’s NZ On Air Critics’ Choice Showcase will be announced at this event as well as the New Zealand Herald Legacy Award recipient, who will be inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame.
