The Sounds music chain has bought out fellow music retailers ECM.
The ECM stores' last day of trading under that name will be October 26, says MD Rod Croon, before beginning the transition to Sounds. The one exception is the St Lukes store in Auckland, which will continue to operate as ECM until March 31 next year, when it too will become part of Sounds.
The sale further reduces the number of players in the tough music retail business and comes just weeks after the sale of South Island independents Echo Records to Real Groovy, which now operates stores in the four major cities.
