Dean Morris of Storm Entertainment had one thought when the iconic Kings Arms was earmarked for demolition… How can we save some of this venue that has been such a big player in the New Zealand music scene for the past 36 years. Dean’s creativity in both music and industry was what made him come up with the idea of cutting up the stage and selling framed sections of it off, to not only provide memorabilia for fans and musicians alike, but also to raise money for charity. Peter Burney, manager of Kings Arms was keen to get involved and make it happen. With the family’s consent the project got underway.
The charities chosen are Play it Strange, and Mercy Hospice Ponsonby
The stage, which comprises the hardboard floor and iconic red carpet, has been dissected into rectangular pieces and framed in recycled rimu frames, handmade by Silverdale Furniture Restorations. Each frame is numbered and sports a brass plaque engraved with the the Kings Arms logo. The first batch of 100 units are up for sale. The second batch will be released once first 100 have sold, there are only 300 in total.
THE CHARITIES
Run by Split Enz’s Mike Chunn, Play it Strange exists to shine the spotlight into schools and bring into the light the great songs written there. It runs song writing competitions, where as finalists get to record their songs in professional studios, as well as other song-based programmes and informative avenues.
Mercy Hospice Ponsonby providing a range of specialist community palliative care and hospice services for people facing life limiting illnesses, cares for them with the utmost professional skill, compassion and quality of service. They also offer support to family, friends and carers. Mercy Hospice’s services are free to patients and their families, regardless of age, ethnicity, means or religion, thanks to the generosity of their community.
THE KINGS ARMS LEGACY
Legendary isn't an adjective that one just throws around every day, and yet there it sits comfortably in front of what was one of Auckland’s oldest and most beloved pubs, the venue of choice for touring international, national and local acts. Several generations of Aucklanders darkened its doorways at one time or another and it occupies an integral place in the memories of many. The most famous band to grace its stage was the White Stripes. Other celebrated artists - local and otherwise - owe a debt of gratitude to the Kings Arms for being there when they needed it. It was the backbone of the live music scene in Auckland - every rock band from in or around NZ still had that understandable desire to say "we played the Kings Arms last night".
THE MEMORABILIA
Each of the numbered frames go up for sale on TradeMe on Wed 16th May 2018. Visit TradeMe to secure your piece of live music history.
