Fresh from her new years’ debut on the R&V festival stage, George (Georgia Lines) introduces her own brand of sophisticated R&B-tinged pop with slick new single, Vacant Cities.
Vacant Cities opens with a shimmering intro that breaks into a sparse, laid back groove. Reminiscent of classic, sun-soaked jams of the 90’s but with a fresh 2019 twist, the crisp production is the perfect backdrop for George’s vocals which deliver a warm maturity beyond her years.Co-written with friend and regular collaborator Josh Turner, the single was recorded and produced in Houston over the course of two sessions with Texas-based producer, Abel Orta Jr.
On the surface this may sound like just another love song, but a deeper dig into the lyrics reveals another story altogether. George elaborates: “I was captured by a video on my newsfeed which outlined the concept of ghost cities, and the replication of iconic offshore cityscapes in the middle of China. Despite the objective to create something that’s stylistically popular elsewhere, the cities still lay empty. I thought…maybe that’s also a bit like us…we replicate and curate our own lives in the hope of success or popularity or whatever it may be that we’re searching for, often blindly following what seems to work for others. But if we don’t stay true to ourselves and do our own thing, perhaps we also end up full of emptiness like these cities?”
Irresistibly drawn to creating music from a young age, rising star George was born with creativity in her blood. A love/hate relationship with piano and musical theory further sewed those early musical seeds and allowed George to understand the musical rules in order to bend them her way.George has performed local supports for Hollie Smith, Alae, Avalanche City and Tiki Taane under her full name Georgia Lines. She has continued to hone her sound while taking the time to travel, reflect and write to further find her groove. Working with a collective of local musicians, George’s home studio in Mount Maunganui is the fertile ground where her creativity thrives. Vacant Cities is her first release, and is supported by NZ On Air.
Expect to see more from George in 2019 with more songs, and a tour on the way.
Vacant Cities is available now through Spotify, Apple Music and iTunes.
