....oh shit, sorry, I thought this was the N Z laziest band thread. We write about 1 song every couple of months if we're lucky. We practice for about 3 hours a week. We spent nearly 4 months recording 3 songs using our own gear. We play about 1 gig a month. Yep, I'd say to be in a lazier band with us you'd pretty much have to sit motionless for about 6 months a year staring at a wall.

Far be it from me to call you dumb... But yeah I think if maybe look at this from the perspective of the people who run the show here in NZ, you know, those few old guys in suits whose business isn't really music, you'll find that 48May, Dei Hamo, Scribe, and whoever else you care to name, are only getting funding because they are commercially viable. They cater to a certain demographic (screaming teenage girls) and the respective record companies stand to make a fair bit of coin. Musical talent, in my opinion, is very rarely recognised by monetary rewards. Those musicians who are truly about the music won't care about some dude in an office, they'll dig the respect they get from those in the know, you know?
So yeah, '48gay' may be lacking in creativity or not bringing anything terribly new to the musical spectrum but they chose to sell-out, for lack of a better term, and so recieve money to do what somebody else wants.
If anything I have said is factually incorrect (something will be) and you are party to accurate information, don't hesitate to set me straight.

You are so right mate! Talent and hardwork don't get as much recognition as ripping off the sound of an overseas band does in NZ. I am sick to f*cking death of people championing bands because they can be compared to some other f*cktards overseas or even worse, simply because they are a NZ band. Being a New Zealand band does not make you good by default, just as being original does not make you good by default.

10 years ago you could read a review of an NZ band and it would be treated like any other band review i.e. if the band sucked, it said they sucked. These days people are viewed as being anti-NZ and non-supportive of Kiwi music if they say one negative word about an NZ band. I'm sick of this sh*t!!! It should be credit where credit is deserved, not f*cking credit because you come from NZ. Blindspott - suck! The Feelers - suck! Stella* - suck! The amalgamated mish-mash monster that is the solo acoustic female artist with the voice of an angel that has 6 billion layers of digital processing on it to get it to sound like an angel - suck!

It seems most people on this forum, especially if they are from a band, are compltely jealous of any other New Zealand act that has experienced success. Whether it be in hip hop, pop rock etc.

Perhaps you too will find success if your sound is appealing to a wide audeience, after all how do you really expect to make a living off music, or "make it" if you continue to play to a small segment of a large market.

Music is as much artistry as it is about good business sense.

music is about 90% business related.

its all about establishing a market to sell your product into.
If you can establish your own market (a decent sized market) then you have a good base to sell your product into.

if you dont establish a market first - then you will never generate sales.

its a pretty simple business equation.
