Like I said Baphomet auckland is "Hip Hop" central. They'll never sell out a dedicated rock/metal festival. As I said look at Priests bad pre sales. Also why do you think the Big day out has to have acts other than rock acts? The gantsas just wouldn't go otherwise mate!

saying that auckland is 'hip hop central' is a your own way of viewing it and a gross generalisation but i really doubt it, there is no hip hope capitol in this country just like there is no metal capitol. as for big day out its meant to be a multi genre event (and you make it sound as if it has hip hop act cause its in auckland but don't forget it is a total australian organised event) ive been to bdo several times now and the crowd for the hip hop stage is tiny, like no more than 300.dont forget metallica sold it out (not any other band) in 04, next year beasty boys headline and not even close to selling it out then in 07 tool muse and the killers (not a fan of the last 2) and bam sold out AGAIN. and yeah i would agree that many south islanders wouldnt come up here for a rock fest but you would lose way more people traveling from auckland to the south island. and the reason i thought it was gonna be in auckland is coz my friend who is in sonic alter told me that the rck2wgtn organiser came to them and told them so, its just hearsay but it sounded convincing

When I saw Metallica in '98 in Welly, a majority of the punters there that I spoke with in the queue were from ChCh or Dunedin.

Heh, I was at the Ballbreaker gig in the 90's... monster of a show!

Hmmm "TheRoadie"... I think we may have met backstage a couple of times. You're not a bearded dude with long hair? Did you work with Southern Amp last year?

I'm a bearded dude, but the long tresses are long gone now...replaced by grey shorter hair! Hahahahaha
Probably have met you backstage, or in a lighting box somewhere....but those days are gone now. Family commitments dictate that. I have wonderful memories of my days on the road with different bands & shows. I still retain contacts in the industry though. Catch up occasionally & get asked to do the odd gig here or there, but with my job being a shift work job I can't commit to them anymore. I didn't have anything to do with Southern amp, mate. I haven't worked in the industry for probably a good 6 years now. The only thing I got now are the memories & my radio shwo once a week!

Well baphomet you obviously know better than someone who worked in the industry for over 20 years. I mean hell all that time I put in with Frontier touring, Pacific Entertainement & Stesons etc touring & doing their gigs I obviously learnt nothing about the different venues & audiences.
I can remember when Paul Dainty had Bones Thugs & Harmony in CHCH & Motorhead in auckland & the dumbasses wondered why both concerts got canceled due to "Logistics" ( LOW TICKET SALES!!!). Incidentally some 12 or so years later the same promotor whot hought what a good diea it was to put Judas Priest in auckland! Good one that.
Ever wonder why Maiden has never come back to NZ? Because they ahd pathetic sales in auckland in 92 last time they were here! But then you know better mate so hey I'll say no more eh?

Hmm, I'm fairly sure we met out back of the Civic when my band was supporting Blindspott, we talked about The Who and John Foggerty, amongst others if I recall.

I always remember interesting conversations about music Cool

If that's not you then my bad.

look i was not trying to offend you, and im sorry if i did. but my view remains the same. and there is no way for you to prove how well the concerts WOULD have done had they been put in different cities. im just basing my logic on the fact that auckland has the largest population in the country and have major cities on either side of us (including hamilton which has an awsome metal fanbase). you are a man of experience and im not trying to discredit what you are telling me, im really not.

I worked in the industtry in this country & Oz for 20 years. I know what your saying about population abses, but thats the mistake some promotors make too. Just ebcause you have a big population doesn't mean they'll go. Look at the demographics within that population.
Interestingly I was told that 60% of all the ticket sales for the Wellington event came from the south Island.

JOHN FOGGARTY! Shit no, KING that wouldn't be me! I'm a Maiden/ Priest man through & through! Might have talked about The Who.
Blindspott at the Civic. I don't recall ever doing them at the civic, but then I sued to go between venues & do set ups so I may have. As I say I've been outta the game a while. Last big gig I did was probably 1999.
I've done a couple of local bands from time to time, but nothings erious.

On the whole topic, really I dunno why he didn't just do Rick2wgtn again.
Maybe the easter trading thing was a problem, so move the dates. You have to establish a festival, & it takes a couple of years. There was nothing wrong with Wellington as a venue ( especially sicne I get free accomadationt here with the sister in law! hehehe) , I just think if hes serious about establishing a festival it nees to be the same city every year. Like the B.D.O, its always auckland on this side of the ditch.
Might be folly for him to move it each eyar. I dunno. As I say I've been out of the game a while, maybe things have changed.

it was a great place to hold it! iv only been to welly once when i was really young and dont remember it. i had the best weekend at rck2wgtn and am so glad i went (any excuse to get outa auckland). but the problems that i face personally were financially, im a broke ass uni student and that event was very costly for me. if acdc and metallica (espetially metallica) played in welly or chch id go see them coz im dedicated but i know many people in my predicament who just could not afford to go which sucks. either way im looking forward to next year (if it gets finalised, fingers crossed)

As you know its definitely happening. And I thik the Easter thing was an issue for them, hence why they changed the dates of it.

I'm not sure when the site was updated, but I saw this last night and didn't notice anyone commenting on it in this thread so:

Population bases don't mean anything. Judas Priest cancelled in Auckland. Maybe that show should have gone to Wellington or Taranaki in smaller venues?
I read in the newspaper (?) Capital C would never put a show on at Westpac ever again.
If the bill is a good one metal fans will travel, just like they do in Europe.

Thanks Prickles, here's the pic from the CapitalC website:

Soooo... I guess it's no longer a rumour. That is, except for the location. And the date. Hmm...

also i think it would be a good idea if they cut weta workshop, the dragon, fire dancers AND THOSE ZOMBIE CHEERLEADERS!!! a) they didn't really do anything at all and b) they had no lights or anything on them so you couldn't even see them

Yeah man!

Possibilities for headliners (in my opinion) which would generate the most public interest and income are :

Motley Crue - with the recent release of Saints of LA (which rocks)

AC/DC - our neighborsHappy And with new material coming soon

Metallica - BDO 04 proved they can sell out a gig and draw a crowd. Their new material would just add to that. The day that never comes is amazing!

Guns N' Roses - Potentially the biggest! Chinese Democracy is the world famous never ending saga... which is coming to an end soon. The band are officially releasing material this year, and probably early next year, and if Rock2???? was one of the 1st gigs they played their new unheard tracks at, it would truely be a historic event in anyones books.

What do you all think?
